We believe in continuous learning and are constantly striving to strengthen our existing customer relationships. Our Top Tips of the Month
Native Plant of the Month:
Winterberry Holly
As the last of our fall-blooming plants fade with the approach of winter, it's time to focus on those with high winter value, both for ornamental appeal and for wildlife. A great example of a versatile landscape shrub that truly excels in the "off-season" is Ilex verticillata. Its bright red berries offer nutritious food for birds and provide a striking contrast against the brown tones of late fall and winter snow.
Horticulture Tip of the Month:
What to do with the Leaves?
Instead of bagging and sending fallen leaves to a landfill, which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, there are several environmentally sound alternatives. The simplest method is to use a mulching lawnmower to finely chop the leaves and leave them on the lawn. This natural mulch decomposes, returning valuable nutrients and organic matter to the soil. For larger quantities, composting is an excellent option; mix the leaves with grass clippings or food scraps to create nutrient-rich compost for gardens. Finally, using leaves as deep mulch around trees and garden beds can insulate plants, suppress weeds, and retain soil moisture.
Invasive Plant of the Month:
Heavenly Bamboo (Nandina)
A very popular ornamental shrub, Nandina domestica is considered an invasive species because it easily escapes cultivation and forms dense thickets in natural areas, outcompeting native understory plants and altering habitat structure. It spreads both by sucker and because birds consume and spread its bright red berries. A superior native alternative is the Virginia Sweetspire, which provides multi-season interest with fragrant white flowers and brilliant red fall foliage, offering similar aesthetic appeal without the ecological threat.
