Our Top Tips of the Month
Native Plant of the Month:
Coral Honeysuckle
Our native honeysuckle, Lonicera sempervirens, is a gorgeous, vibrant flowering vine that begins to bloom in late March-early April, and doesn’t quit until past frost in the fall. It is highly attractive to hummingbirds and bees, and grows quickly in full sun to part sun. “Major Wheeler” is a common varietal readily available at most garden centers.
Horticulture Tip of the Month:
Effective Weed Control
Spring is the time for abundant growth - both desirable and not as welcome. Depending on the area you need to control weeds in, there are a number of methods that can be effective.
For garden beds, using a thick layer of natural shredded hardwood mulch, cardboard, or wood chips can help suppress germination. Hand-pulling young weeds after rain makes it easier to remove them, and boiling water can be thrown on hard surfaces to kill unwanted vegetation.
Invasive Plant of the Month:
Multiflora Rose
This is the pretty but thorny nuisance you’ve noticed growing along the trails in the woods, near rivers and creeks, and in open meadows. These dense, impenetrable thickets choke out native plants and degrade wildlife habitat. They also reduce available foraging area for livestock, and can live a long time. They quickly spread by seed and via suckers. Its rose hips are edible and high in Vitamin C, and can be harvested in autumn.

I brought people to the outdoors in various settings in order to provide them with the ingredients necessary to create a meaningful and lasting relationship with nature. I began to notice the impact that ecotourism has on fragile ecosystems and that's what inspired me to bring nature right to people's yards. At Ecoscape. we believe exposure to nature is crucial for human health and happiness and we are creating better yards using eco-logic.
Q: What does it mean to be a Best Of Roanoke winner?
