Our Top Tips of the Month
Native Plant of the Month:
Common Boneset
As late summer transitions to early fall, you may notice a profusion of yellow and white flowers in naturalized areas: this is the season of Boneset, Goldenrod, and Wingstem. Eupatorium perfoliatum is closely related to Joe Pye Weed, but with pure white blossoms. Just like its cousin, it is a big pollinator magnet. Boneset is also well known for its medicinal properties, traditionally used in herbal medicine to treat fevers by inducing a cooling sweat. While it is known to be antibacterial and antiviral, if taken in the wrong dose it can be toxic.
Horticulture Tip of the Month:
Harvesting Seeds
First, select the healthiest, fully mature plants in your garden and collect seeds on a dry day by cutting seed heads into paper bags or extracting seeds from pods or fleshy fruits, and allowing them to dry on a non-stick surface like waxed paper or a paper plate. Store the clean, dry seeds in labeled paper envelopes in a cool, dark, and dry place to keep them viable for the next planting season. Next spring, enjoy your favorite plants all over again - or share with friends!
Invasive Plant of the Month:
Amur Honeysuckle
Around this time of year Lonicera maackii will begin to set fruit, with bright red berries all along the stems. This aggressive invader of the understory leafs out earlier in the spring and retains its leaves later into the fall, creating dense shade that blocks sunlight from native understory plants. This alters the forest ecology as it provides shade-loving invasive plants an opportunity to move in. This plant forms dense thickets that crowd out native vegetation and prevent the growth of new trees, and uses allelopathy to chemically alter the soil to be unfavorable to other plants. The berries are not very nutritious for birds, but they will consume them and spread them regardless. Both mechanical and chemical control methods can be effective on this woody shrub. This is the time of year where foliar sprays of glyphosate or triclopyr are most effective, as the plant is drawing resources down to its roots.

Q: How did your career path lead you to your current position?
A: From my teens through my early twenties, I worked in the Outdoor Rec industry and eventually got my BA in Outdoor Recreation Business Administration. I brought people to the outdoors in various settings in order to provide them with the ingredients necessary to create a meaningful and lasting relationship with nature. I began to notice the impact that ecotourism has on fragile ecosystems and that's what inspired me to bring nature right to people's yards. At Ecoscape. we believe exposure to nature is crucial for human health and happiness and we are creating better yards using eco-logic.
